A No Limit Tourney Guide: Playing on the Flop

A lot of the online No Limit strategy guides focus on helping players take the pot before the flop, and while this is helpful, a lot of times it does not take place in real tournaments. If other players call, then you must know the tactics for playing on the flop.

First, off, by playing only the premium hands in a No Limit tournament, you do not just remain in contention but also save your money for the big raises necessary for the times when you are in the flop, and that is something that you should always bear in mind.

If you are holding a Queen and Jack and the flop comes out J,6,4, your No Limit tournament strategy would be deciding just how much to bet. If you end up with JJ, then you can bet more than the pot value, or if a QQ, then you can wager double the pot.

While this is a substantial amount, your No Limit strategy is to make sure that the weak hands do not get a chance to get stronger, or allow the other players on the table to draw in cheaply. By applying this tactic, you put the pressure on your opponents; they either fold or make the expensive draw.

Another part of your No Limit strategy that should always be taken into consideration is that of your chip stack. Of course, the amount you bet will depend on much you actually have left. In general however, some would bet a third of what they have, especially in the latter tables.

This type of No Limit betting will allow them to put pressure on the other players, at the same time reserving some for a final big raise. This is an important part of any strategy, and keeping a running count of your chip stack, while remaining focused on the current hand, is something that you should take the time to work on.

Do not forget that part of any good No Limit tournament strategy is an evaluation of the table and yourself. Make certain that you are not issuing any tells that can read by the other players, and that you are doing your best to make sure that you read them.

Playing in No Limit tournaments always brings out the best in good players, and the worst in the mediocre ones. If you hold on to the right cards, and play them at the appropriate times, then you will amplify your chances of emerging from the table as the winner.
