    Keeping Poker Simple

The number of Poker strategy guides available has made it possible for more people to play the game. However, this has led to an excessive use of tactics by some players and costing them the game. What you should strive for early on is to try and keep things as fundamental as possible.

Some players seem to believe that a very complex Poker strategy is the key to winning it all. That is not the case, and in fact may make things more difficult.

One of the most frequent times wherein players over complicate the game is in bluffing.

Bluffing is an important Poker strategy, but some simply over use it. They utilize it against every player in every table and that can be disastrous. Instead of folding when the hand is very weak, they bluff, throw in money, and end up losing a lot because they are already too committed to the pot to drop out.

Another example of plays becoming more complicated that they should be is when one gets an AA or AK. The proper Poker strategy would be to use this to take the pot before the flop. But a lot of players, enamored with the strength of the combination, often slow play these hands.

This is very dangerous. By slow playing all the way to the flop, the turn and the river, you not only weaken the hands, but also increase the opportunity for the opponents to get a bigger hand. You are also giving it to them cheaply on the draw.

The same can be said for overcalling. That is another Poker strategy used by players in an attempt to increase the pot, but a lot of times they do not know the odds or even the position that they are in to make this play more effective. Again, it is best to keep things simple.

Some players also like to call instead of raising, trying to get as many players to get into the pot as possible. Unless you have the nuts, this is not a viable option and will only make things more difficult for you as the odds in your favor go down.

If there is one thing that you should know about Poker odds, it is that if you have a good hand, use it, otherwise its value will go down the deeper you get into the game.

Trying to show off your knowledge of Poker by trying out different strategies will do you no good. Whether playing cash games or Poker tourneys, always adhere to the basic principles, and modify them only as you see fit. Play this way and you will be much closer to seizing that pot.
